Flux Factory moving ... and Santa Fe Art Institute lobbying to keep its space

As with many civil society initiatives, it is sometimes necessary to change space ... and sometimes necessary to fight for the one you already have. Herewith I am re-posting two notes from the Flux Factory and SFAI:

[Flux Factory]

After our recent eviction in October, Flux Factory is setting up house (again) in our beloved Long Island City, Queens!

We’re excited to report that we’ll be occupying an 8000 square foot, 3 story building just two blocks north of Queens Plaza at 39-31 29th street. We’re working with the wonderful HWKN design team to create a multi-purpose arts center with galleries, studios, and production facilities.

The new Flux Factory will still be devoted to producing collaborative projects and providing affordable work residencies for artists. We’ve got wonderful projects coming up in 2009, including our famous bus tours and a grande science fair! And of course an inaugural show once we’re done renovations. SFAI - Connecting You to the Contemporary Art that Makes A Difference in the World

Today has been an astounding day filled with new beginnings.

Here in New Mexico, today is the beginning of the 2009 State Legislative sessions. Among many pressing issues to be addressed is the acquisition of the College of Santa Fe by NM Highlands University.

I would like to enlist your support for this acquisition. Although it would mean additional financial responsibility for the state in a year when there are already deficits and funds are very tight, the alternative seems to be unwise. It is a question of short-term costs for long-term gains.

The campus of the College of Santa Fe is an important resource for Santa Fe and all of Northern New Mexico, not only because of its educational programming but also its many lecture and performance facilities (Tipton Hall, Greer Garson Theater and The SCREEN to name the most obvious) but also because of the Santa Fe Art Institute.

Located on the campus of CSF, the SFAI is an independent community arts center that serves all segments of the community, exploring the interconnections of the contemporary arts and society through residencies for artists and writers, public lectures, intensive studio workshops, exhibitions and educational outreach. Although we raised the funds to build our beautiful Ricardo Legoretta building and we have carefully maintained it for the last ten years, we do not own it. The SFAI building belongs to the College of Santa Fe.

If CSF is not acquired by NM Highlands through the NM Dept of Higher Education, it will have to close. This would be a very difficult situation for the SFAI and a great loss to the city and region.

Please contact your state representatives and senators as well as the department of Higher Education and the Governor to tell them how important it is for Santa Fe and Northern NM to have the campus become part of the NM Highlands University. Please support the SFAI by keeping the campus an educational and creative resource for the city, state and nation.
