Karen Phillips YATF Day 3: A focus on community

The first session on Day 3 of the YATF Informal Meeting was one of my favorites. The topic was "Art Spaces as Civic Spaces and Community Development" and featured two panelists: William Wells from the Townhouse Gallery in Cairo and Vicky Holt Takamine from the Pa'i Foundation in Honolulu. The discussant was Joy Mboya from the… Continue

Henry Reese Halloween reading

http://www.sampsoniaway.org/on-the-theater-of-marionettes/2009/08/19/the-selected-prose-of-heinrich-von-kleist/ "Since the first time I read Heinrich von Kleist, I've been impressed by the way he handled his death or, to be precise, by how he committed suicide." The intro is elegant rather than ghoulish, but is there a better teaser on Halloween? I highly recommend this s… Continue

Karen Phillips YATF Day 2: A focus on funding

Last night I experienced my first Egyptian thunder storm. One thunder clap literally shook my bed and also took out the electricity and our internet connection. Fortunately, by the time the first morning session started up, the lights were back on and the sun was breaking up the clouds. Day 2 was full and I’m starting to experience the exhaustion that comes from the over-stimulus of so many new ideas and connections! Today’s sessions focused on International Public Policies in the Arab World an… Continue

Karen Phillips YATF Day 1: A focus on Networks

I woke up this morning to a donkey’s braying and a rooster’s crowing, quite a change from the sound of Cairo’s traffic, which had been my wake up call the last two mornings. Now in the idyllic setting of King Mariout, a village outside of Alexandria where I’m representing fD in the Informal Meeting organized by the Young Arab Theater Fund (YATF). This is… Continue

Henry Reese Sampsonia Way, Online Magazine

Sampsonia Way is an online magazine sponsored by City of Asylum/Pittsburgh, celebrating literary free expression and supporting persecuted poets and novelists worldwide. The name comes from the street where we have gutted and rehabbed 4 derelict homes for use by exiled writers and other writers and translators-in-residence. The debut issue features 3 exiled Chinese writers doing look-backs at Tiananmen Square. The literary section is loaded, with contributions from publishers like Archip… Continue

Todd Lester It's in the way we talk ... LDC's (no, no, no)

In April I presented fD at a conference in Boston and sat in on a panel about cultural exchange. I could not believe my ears when a panelist began advising potential artists-in-residence (in the audience) going to China to beware of being overcharged for materials, chalking it up to China-as-developing-country where such scams are more prevalent. (huh?) I voiced my disagreement, but the scratching-my-head-in-disbelief effect lingers. Just last nite I was having a drink with friends and a staffer… Continue

Robert Mykoff Art(ists') methods of translating various languages /concepts

Hello all, I've got an issue that doesn't speak to the specifics of "reaching" others with activist work or concerns, rather it's a related issue,, a personal request for help re: artwork that I'm involved in, aimed at {or relating to} issues that involve much of the activist & social-justice-changes that many folks on fD are involved in: basically i've been trying to find online translator apps /progs that are free-- or at least very affordable on an artist's budget;-) , for transla… Continue

Todd Lester First as Tragedy, Then as Farce (People stopping people from doing things .. was that a bomb scare @ Cooper Union?)

Hi all, Last nite I went to hear Žižek speak at Cooper Union in NYC. The lecture got to run its full course but the Q&A was cut short with (at the time) pretty lame reasoning. Everybody moved out of the Great Hall relatively cheerful after an hour+ of Z's trademark stimulation. Upon exiting (and a bit of NYPD eavesdropping), I learned that someone had called in a bomb threat. Funny the cover of Z's new book, First as Tragedy, Then as Farce, has a quote from New Republic 'The most dang… Continue
