From October 30 to November 1, the
Gyeonggi Creation Center was launched in the Gyeonggi Province of Korea. On the occasion of its launch,
Res Artis held a regional
conference on the theme 'The 21st Century Art Residency & New Institutional Collaborations'.
Res Artis is a worldwide network of artist residencies. I am on the board of directors of Res Artis due, in part, to the open-arms reception I received back in 2005 for my idea of
art spaces hosting activism & strengthening community engagement during a conference in Berlin. Whereas I was new to the field at that point, I was encouraged by folks like Rudolf Brunger (
UfaFabrik) and Clayton Campbell (
18th Street Arts Center) to speak up and share the ideas that grew to become freeDimensional.
Now in 2009 at events like the Korea regional meeting, I feel at home wearing the two hats of of RA board member while also searching for art spaces using their programs/positions in ways that are useful to the human rights sector. I met several spaces that fit the bill last week at the conference in Korea, including one in Malaysia. And like clockwork - upon my return - fD received a nomination for an actor in distress who ended up in Malaysia. Things do seem to fall in place somehow ...

Poland from November 16 to 19, 2009. And the next General Assembly is in
